🇮🇳15th August... Not only India but South Korea, Bahrain and Republic of the Congo also share their independence day with India, - South Korea won its independence from Japan on 15th August 1945, Bahrain from UK in 1971 and Republic of the Congo from France in 1960.
🇮🇳30 June 1948 was the originally decided date for transfer of power but Muslim League's obstructionist approach in and towards the constituent assembly, breakout of communal riots andJinnah's obduracy regarding Partition
forced Britain's hand and in the June 3, 1947 Mountbatten Plan, it was announced that 15th August would be the date of independence.
🇮🇳15th August was chosen as the date of Indian independence to commemorate the 2-yr anniversary of the Allied Forces' victory in the WW2 in 1945. This was the day Japan had surrendered after 2 Nuclear bombs were dropped on its cities a week before.
🇮🇳By this date, all states except J&K, Junagarh and Hyderabad had signed an Instrument of Accession with the Indian government.
🇮🇳At the time of independence there were 562 princely states in India. Out of those 560 of these states joined India and the remaining two (Hyderabad and Junagadh) were annexed by the Army.
🇮🇳The King of the Jammu and Kashmir princely state didn’t decide which side (Pakistan or India) to join by August 1947. But the Hindu Maharaja finally decided to join India in October 1947.
🇮🇳India – Pakistan border was drawn by a London lawyer, Sir Cyril Radcliffe.
🇮🇳India – Pakistan partition created inter-communal violence, which cost more than 1,000,000 lives. Around 3.5 million Hindus and Sikhs shifted from Pakistan to India and about 5 million Muslims migrated from India to Pakistan.
